Mathematics

“Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty… such as only the greatest art can show.” – Bertrand Russell (Mathematican)

How do we teach mathematics at Kenyngton Manor?

  • Mathematics enables children to stretch and reach up academically – they will discover new knowledge that enables them to solve problems, find creative solutions and make sense of the world around them.
  • Mathematics enables children to stretch and reach in and out – it is a highly collaborative activity requiring the ability to listen to and learn from others. Mathematics is not just about calculating and solving problems – it is about sharing their working out and convincing others of their reasoning.
  • Mathematics enables children to stretch and reach forwards – it takes them from their comfort zone, tests their problem solving and allow them opportunities to deepen their creativity and resilience.

In the Early Years, children develop and deepen their understanding of number and number patterns in real life contexts and problem solving. In their continuous independent play (indoors and outdoors) and when being taught directly by an adult, children interact with numbers, number patterns, shapes and measures.

In Reception, every child follows the NCETM programme ‘Mastering Number’ – the programme aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children. The programme then supplements the maths curriculum in Years 1 and 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number.

As the children move through the school, from years 1 to 6, they will be taught a range of strategies and skills to enable them to attempt any problem. The children will learn about number, algebra, data handling, probability, shape and space.

At Kenyngton Manor, in Years 1 to 6, we follow the ‘Maths No Problem’ approach which supports children in developing their knowledge, skills and understanding. This approach involves lots of shared maths talk, the use of resources and is built using the CPA (concrete, pictorial and abstract) approach.
